Judge Baird v. Bill Bishop

Posted By on February 13, 2009

There’s an article in the Statesman today confirming the rumor that Bill Bishop is going to be challenging Charlie Baird next year for the 299th District Court.

For the record, I’m a big supporter of Judge Baird.  I think he really cares, on a personal level, about what he’s doing, and that’s not something that can be said about everyone. And that’s important.  All our judges have enormous dockets, and it’s not hard to see how, after a while, every case becomes just another cause number.  Doing the job, doing it well, anyway, requires an enormous amount of dedication.

It’s disappointing, though, reading the comments.  All the yelling about prosecutors vs. defense attorneys, and accusations of “coddling” criminals misses the point.  Out of all the things that go into being a good judge, politics are perhaps the least important.
